The gift of being

The gift of being

What is the purpose of life?

That's one of the questions every single human being has asked themselves at least once in their life, and not a single one has got an answer to that.

Why?, some might question, but that answer is simple. We don't know the purpose of life because we don't even know what life is or means.

Does life mean breathing in your lungs? Does it mean feeling and experiencing? Or does it simply mean existing?

Is life "a complex, self-sustaining process of chemical systems capable of metabolism, growth, response to stimuli and reproduction"? Or is it so much more than that?

What if there is no right or wrong definition since life itself can't be right or wrong?

It might just be a complex system that results as an opposite of death, there might not even be a certain or one purpose of life, might even none at all. But does no purpose automatically mean something negative, something bad? Or does exactly this offer new perspectives of what life can be?

Why should life be a simple thing when we are not? When every human being is complex in themselves?

We are life. We are bodies. We are emotions. We are thoughts. We are memories. We are everything and nothing at the same time. We are being born and we are gonna die, and those two things are the only things that we will ever be certain of.

Who cares what comes after death when life is the part that we can actively experience and tell stories about? When every breath is a gift, every blink a new perspective. Every spoken word is something to remember and to cling to, since voices are the first thing we will forget when life vanishes.

To be alive means to be grateful and to be grateful means to cherish. Cherish the air in your lungs, the life that grows on the ground we are standing on. It means mutual respect to every living being because in the end we all share one thing: Life.

Maybe in different ways but as one. And maybe life is exactly that. Testing how grateful you are.

Maybe that's why we possess emotions like sadness, fear and pain. Maybe that's why things like war, illnesses and hurt happen. To cherish what we have.

Maybe those are obstacles in our life that teach us gratitude. Perhaps life is the way how we handle those obstacles.

Maybe that defines who we are.

We are our darkness, we are our shadows, we are our fears.
But we are also our light, our hopes and our dreams.

Maybe we together, all living beings, are life.

In the end it doesn't matter what life is, it is just another unsolved mystery in the back of our mind that tries to search for an explanation.

And why are we looking for one?
Because we are scared.

Scared of existance instead of life, scared of death, darkness or no purpose.

There is no reason for fear because I lied.

There are actually three things we can be certain of and the last one is the most important one that makes a purpose or a definition of life unncessary:

We are.
